Cartwright (b. 1986) is an artist originally from the Houston, Texas area currently based in Boulder, Colorado. She received her MFA (2016) from the University of Colorado Boulder in Art Practices, Painting & Drawing, and her BFA in Painting in 2011 from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas.
Cartwright, disloyal to any particular medium, works within and between painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, installation, photography and video. Her work explores themes of sensory experiences in opposition to the man-made social and material environments. Cartwright has merged her experience as a single mother into her artistic practice to address issues related to the mother embodied and the transgression inherent in the mother-artist duality. Her work is often project-based and influenced by feminist theory and existential phenomenology.
Cartwright has exhibited in Las Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Ortega y Gasset Projects, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston at Lawndale Arts Center, Project Row Houses, and with the Texas-French Alliance’s “Open The Door” public art project in partnership with the Houston Arts League.
