The SHSU student Art Walk was Sam Houston State University's first major art event orchestrated by students only. Catherine Cartwright organized and curated the event, hand-selecting student artists to create installation-based work for store-front windows and building edifices along a busy street in downtown Huntsville, TX. The event created connections between the public and the downtown business sector and the university's art department and their students. The event featured a 25 foot high painting, a 75 foot long mural, a durational performance, installations, and a gallery full of drawings, paintings, and sculpture. Drawing inspiration from the San Francisco Art Walk, and the Galveston Art Walk, the public was able to experience contemporary art at street level as had never been seen before in Huntsville, TX.
The Art Walk was featured on the cover of the Huntsville Item twice, follow the links below. A very gracious thanks to Matt Weintritt of the Huntsville Item. http://itemonline.com/local/x185147055/Art-Walk-draws-crowd http://itemonline.com/local/x2039718989/SHSU-students-prepare-for-Art-Walk |
